FireSide FAQs

Hi, my name is Art Mormile, owner of the Adirondack Fireplace Company. For over thirty years, I have committed my life to bringing our customers the latest & most efficient heating products available. Below are some common questions I get asked so I have included them in our FireSide FAQs to help you get answers to some basic questions online.

Q. How much fuel will I use if I buy a wood, gas or pellet stove or fireplace?

Answer: Although there are many contributing factors to consider like:

  • How cold will the winter be?

  • How well insulated is your home?

  • What temperature would you be comfortable at?

A good rule of thumb is:

  • One gallon of fuel oil gives you 140,000 BTU of heat

  • One gallon of LP (propane) gives you 90,000 BTU of heat

  • One pound of the pellets we sell (American Energex Premium Grade Hardwood Pellets) will give you 8,400 BTU of heat (40lbs/bag)

  • One full cord of hard wood, 4' W x 4' L x 8'H, will give you appropriately 24,000,000 BTU when burned.

So...

  • 24,000,000 BTU per cord of wood equals:

    • 172 gallons of fuel

    • 267 gallons of L.P. Gas

    • 1.33 tons of pellets

If you apply the current prices of the above fuels, you can compare the value of each fuel and if you know how much oil or gas you used last year, you can also get an idea of how much wood or pellets you would use. So, if you burned fuel oil for heat and last year you used 360 gallons of oil, that would mean that you would have to buy three tons of pellets to get the same heat.
